In 2009, a qualitative study of developers’ experiences of MADD was undertaken. The research was part of a larger project that focused on how market relations interact with, shape, and control developers’ experiences and expectations. The study covered Sweden, the UK, and the US because these countries have significant levels of maturity in the mobile marketplace, and it included both Apple and Google developers, with the former being the focus of this paper. We aimed to capture the everyday working experiences of developers with varying expertise and a mixture of employment contracts. Topics discussed included working practices, reasons for developing for mobile devices, attraction to and experiences of particular platforms, the development process, and distribution strategies. The study was piloted using a focus group, which provided a vantage point from which to launch the broader study.
