The principal finding in this study was that active management did not provoke afterpains to a higher extent
than expectant management. Surprisingly, we found that expectantly managed women scored higher when they
assessed their afterpains both at the 2-hour follow-up and the day after delivery. All mothers, independent of
management, scored afterpains higher the day after delivery, compared with 2 hours after delivery. It has
previously been reported by Stainton that mothers have intensive afterpains 1 day after birth (2)
