Patients with acute GVHD are at high risk for steroid myopathy and have strengthening exercises prescribed in hopes of preserving function. The my- opathy affects postural muscles and proximal groups more than distal, and the first signs noted by the patient are arising from a chair or climbing steps. Adaptations are also provided which make activities safer and less exhausting. These may include adaptive equipment, such as elevated commode seats and bath benches; strategies to avoid low furniture, including firm seat cushions and raised mattresses; and tips such as sideways descent and ascent of stairs.
