Located beneath an elevated street in one of Toronto’s newest neighbourhoods [West Don Lands] is Underpass Park, an innovative playspace that is part of Waterfront Toronto’s redevelopment scheme. It is an excellent example of transforming an ignored, 1.05-hectare area into a community hub. This is a precedent for the Greater Toronto Area; the first designed use of space beneath highway structures. In addition, Underpass Park is Canada’s largest park to be constructed below an overpass. The masterminds behind this success are landscape architectural firm Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg with The Planning Partnership. According to Greg Smallenberg, “There has to be a number of things, in a space like this, that can facilitate all aspects of play and recreation —or just social space to relate to the very youngest and the very oldest.”
