Special Libraries Association --Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA-AGC)
The SLA-AGC has a training component among its several professional activities,
which started the same year the Chapter was created in 1992. The training program
includes workshops offered twic e a year in different Gulf States by rotation. Initially
one of the KFUPM Library Senior Managers was entrusted with the responsibility
of designing and conducting workshops, which is why we find some similarities
in the topics, format and bilingual presentations between KFUPM Library short
courses and the SLA-AGC training workshops. These workshops are handled by a
mix of Arabic and non-Arabic resource persons. Some subject specialists related to
workshop topics are also invited from overseas as instructors. Lately the Chapter
has started selecting more advanced topics, which require participants of higher-
level positions, including middle managers. Some of the recent workshop topics
included Building consortia and negotiating licenses for databases; Contemporary
topics in licensing & consortia; Health information under microscope and the topic
of the recently concluded workshops was the Nuts and bolts of digital repositories
and open access, held in Doha, Qatar. These workshops are rated high because of
the topics, quality of presentations, five-star hotel environment and such locations
as Dubai, Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi and other commercial and tourist places. One
of the two workshops precedes the annual conference. Many people want to attend
both events in a single trip. The SLA-AGC CE program is doing well in terms of the
number of participants. Registration of participants to the SLA-AGC workshops
are often closed much before the date of the event.
