Restaurant car. The first dining car or train restaurant was introduced around 1880. Up until then, passengers had to to bring food or buy it from small stalls at the water stops.Such poor conditions discouraged many from making the journey. In addition, lengthy stops prolonged the trips at an inconvenience for passengers as well as for the railway companies. In this respect, the restaurant car represented a new organization not only of provision, but also of the organization of time. Later the restaurant car concepts developed and for many railways, the quality of this particular facility became an important sales argument.
