Very low HHR was identified in the location of the university campus and school yard, as a consequence of a combination of the lower exposure to contaminants and the lower HM concentrations in soil. For the planned land uses, the analysis shows a general decrease in the HHR, mainly due to the decrease in the extent of the agricultural use of the area. The HHR is lowered by interruption in the food chain pathway.
In this case, the change of land use from agricultural to recreational can be considered as a good option for the reduction in HHR from HM contaminated soil (Xenidis et al., 2003). The HHR will be high or very high in the areas of the remaining agricultural land uses, where food is produced.
