3.1. Bird abundance
We recorded 1927 detections of 31 scrub-shrub bird species
during the course of the study and monitored 368 nests. We had
sufficient data to estimate densities for four bird species, Chestnutsided
Warbler (scientific names in Tables 1 and 2), Common
Yellowthroat, Gray Catbird, and Song Sparrow. The density of
Chestnut-sided Warblers was greater in silvicultural openings in
both years. Density of Song Sparrows was greater in wildlife
openings in both years, and Gray Catbirds had higher density in
wildlife openings in 2005 (Table 1). Common Yellowthroat did not
differ in density between wildlife and silvicultural openings.
Several of the 15 scrub-shrub bird species that were too scarce
to analyze using DISTANCE yet occurred at 5 sampling points
differed in abundance between wildlife and silvicultural openings
in both 2004 and 2005: White-throated sparrows, Indigo Buntings
and Blue-winged Warblers were more abundant in wildlife
openings than silvicultural openings, and Black-and-white Warblers
were significantly more abundant in silvicultural openings
