How to Survive a Disaster
Please remain in your seats! This is not a real disaster! I repeat this is not a real disaster! But what if it was? Would you be prepared?
Good afternoon students and staff. In the interests of school safety I would like to present a short demonstration on what to do when disaster strikes. We have a good record of disaster prevention, as your frequent fire drills attest, but there is always room for improvement. Fire, earthquake, flood-they all pose enormous threats and we should be ready in case they strike. Remember, in any emergency you must stop …think …act!!
Let’s consider fire first!! If a fire was to break out in this room you would have to put out the blaze immediately. Try these three steps. First, stamp on the blaze…Firm, consistent stamps are needed. Secondly, use a fire extinguisher or fire hose. These are located on many of the interior walls around the school… like this one. Familiarise yourself with their location!. Thirdly, in the absence of suitable fire fighting equipment, you could smother the fire suitable cloth. A blazer is ideal.
If your clothing should ignite while fighting the fire… it would be a good idea to put yourself out!!! You must stop…drop… and roll… like this…
What if an earthquake was to occur? What would you do? Would you know exactly what action was required? It is important to get under a desk or table immediately to protect yourself from any falling objects. I would recommend this position. Or secondly you might seek protection in a door way, like this. I advise against going outside. Being crushed by a toppling tower block is not a good experience.
