I’m probably not the best judge of something like that, since my job and family demands have made it harder for me to find time to play games. But I guess I’ll try to make up some kind of answer. The first nail I saw in the adventure game coffin was when Half Life came out. They took an FPS and actually added some logical story and puzzle elements on top of the mechanics in a way that made it feel a lot more immersive than the usual action game of the period. And a lot of games seem to have followed that model with great success.
