this story is tale a man who sells his soul to devil for earthly benefits. The theme or lesson to be learned from this tale is that
greedy people and selfish action can lead to an awful fortune. I think Tom is static character because he is greedy and trades his soul but then tries to turn into a churchgoer around because hr realized is damned and tries cheat his fate . Tom never changes throughout the story he just tries to cheat. Tom's wife is static character because she is miserble and greedy from the beginning of the story until she tries to force the devil into trade and she disappears. The tone of the story is haughty because after making a deal with the devil because almost arrogant with the fact that he won't accept his mistake. He believes he can cheat his way out and get away with it.
This story a satire is a piece of work that criticizes some element of human folly and this story does exactly that. The story satirizes societal greed and hypocrisy , particularly that of the Puritans , the religious group that settled the Charles Bay during the time period in which this story takes places. Through Tom Walker is befinitely unlikable he is also easily comparable to others who let greed , stinginess , and frugality blind them to the point where they have sold their souls.
In the end to had regret about his decision to trade his soul for money. He became a violent churchgoer . He tried to cheat his way of his fate.
