Zaccaro et al. (2001) define team leadership as focusing on the project team and their
teamwork processes. Toor (2011) argues that total reliance on a single leader such as
the project manager cannot lead to effective teamwork in construction and a mix is
always better. As teams become more experienced and achieve a significant level of
expertise, other members may take over more of the leadership functions, while
designated leaders retain their boundary spanning responsibilities (Zaccaro et al., 2001).
Hence, experienced and matured team members as seen in construction (Senaratne and
Malewana, 2011) could share these leadership roles as appropriately between them.
