information is shared, allowing the patient to
make a decision regarding goal attainment.
The final step in the interaction process is
transaction. It involves bargaining, negotiating,
and social exchange. The nurse and patient share
their frame of reference and then set mutual
goals. Goal attainment is the salient factor of
King's theory, and it is only through nursepatient
interaction and transaction that mutual
goals can be set. Once the goals are set, the nurse
and patient collaborate to formulate the means
by which the goals can be attained.
Assumptions
King (1981) made the following seven assumptions
which are related to the nurse-patient
interaction process.
1 Perceptions of nurse and client influence the
interaction process.
2 Goals, needs, and values of nurse and client
influence the interaction process.
3 Individuals have a right to knowledge about
themselves.
4 Individuals have a right to participate in
decisions that influence their life, health
