In the present study, the nasolabial fold was selected as an anatomic site, as each side of the face could be treated by using a different method for easy comparison. The local mass effect of the HA filler lasted between 6 and 12 months, with the duration primarily determined by the degree of movement of the injected site 4. As the nasolabial fold frequent moves during facial expressions, the injected filler often spreads and breaks down faster than in other less mobile areas. Therefore, combination therapies are often used to maintain a longer affect. The beveling and fern techniques have since been developed to prevent filler migration to the upper part of the nasolabial fold.
