The American Cancer Society recommends that primary care practitioners examine patients at high risk for oral cancer as part of a routine check-up because this would give medical practitioners the opportunity to detect oral cancer at an early stage.[10] NPs are in an optimal position to extend oral health promotion, and the results of their questionnaire showed that 91.5% believe that oral cancer examinations should be provided annually for patients over 40; however, 52.9% had never provided an oral examination for their adult patients. In addition, 46.2% of the participants felt they needed more training for this competency. Improvements will require more education, awareness, and attention. Meng et al[9] suggested that continuing education may be the best plan of action.
