Twenty-nine consecutive patients with displaced comminuted
patellar fractures between March 2008 and September 2011 were
enrolled in this prospective study, including 20 males and nine
females, with a mean age of 44.5 10.4 (range 27–65) years. Seven
injuries were caused by motor vehicle accidents, seven by a fall from a
height, and 15 by tumbling. Seven injuries had three fragments,
18 had four fragments, and four had 5 fragments. All of the patients
were treated using Ni-Ti PC fixation and Ethibond suture cerclage.
This study was approved by our institutional Ethics Committee, with
all patients providing written informed consent prior to surgery.
Demographic characteristics of the patients are shown in Table 1.
