Eutrophication of water can induce harmful algal blooms (HABs). These blooms cause harm through anoxia and the
production of toxic compounds that impact fisheries resources, aquatic ecosystems, and human health (Anderson et al.,
2002). Many physical, chemical, and biological treatments have been proposed to combat eutrophication and HABs. In
particular, allelopathic effect of aquatic macrophytes is considered as an environment-friendly and promising alternative for
controlling HABs. Hilt and Gross (2008) suggested that the inhibition of harmful algae by the released of allelochemicals from
submerged macrophytes may contribute to the stabilization of clear-water states in shallowlakes. For example, Myriophyllum
spicatum can produce polyphenols such as ellagic, gallic, and pyrogallic acids, and (þ)-catechin, which displayed individual
and synergistic effects which suppressed the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa (Nakai et al., 2000). The invasive aquatic plant,
alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) has shown to potentially inhibit algal growth, possibly thought the production of
allelopathic chemicals (Zuo et al., 2012a). Thus, macrophytes allelopathy can significantly suppress harmful algae.
