Nurses play a pivotal role in medication management
and safety, which extends beyond a responsibility for
just preparing and administering medications as
prescribed. Nurses coordinate the delivery of care and
have the closest interaction with patients, which
enables them to assess the condition of the patients in
relation to the medications that are prescribed. Other
studies also identified nurses’ clinical reasoning and
coordination of care with physicians and pharmacists
as being essential for safe medication administration
(Eisenhauer et al. 2007, Popescu et al. 2011, Dickson
& Flynn 2012). However, it is sometimes not clear
where their responsibility ends.
