Benzene is absorbed through the human skin as indicated by studies conducted in vivo and in vitro. One study found that on average 0.02-0.05% of the benzene applied to skin was absorbed; the remainder quickly volatilised. An hourly absorption of 0.4 mg/cm2 has also been reported when the forearm was bathed in liquid benzene.
It has been estimated that an adult working in ambient air containing benzene vapors at a concentration of 32 mg/m3 (10 ppm) would absorb 7.5 µl/h via inhalation and 1.5 µl/h via whole body (2m2) dermal exposure.
