To esterify the free OH groups, ethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers
are reacted with carboxylic acids, especially acetic acid, using
proton catalysts:
Ethyl glycol acetate (2-ethoxyethyl acetate) is also produced
(e.g., by Nisso) from ethyl acetate by reaction with ethylene
oxide:
Friedel-Crafts systems with, e. g., N- or P-containing ligands
such as AICI,.N(C2H,), are used as catalysts.
Ethyl glycol acetate is an excellent solvent for nitrocellulose and
cellulose ether used in the manufacture and processing of
varnish.
