The purpose of the first stage is to ground the student in the problem’s context
and to provide inspiration for things the student can immediately begin to
investigate (Fortus, Krajcikb, Dershimerb, Marx, & Mamlok-Naamand, 2005). This
phase is also intended to connect what is known and what needs to be learned
(Diaz & King, 2007).
