The data used in this study were collected in 2005 at a university in Sendai in the northern part of Japan. At the survey time, the university had approximately 18,000 students from all over Japan. A convenience sampling was used for the survey. One of the authors administered the questionnaire survey in several criminal law and criminal justice courses. The purpose and importance of the survey were explained to the participants. The participants were also informed that the survey was anonymous and that their participation was voluntary. They were asked to stop answering questions if they did not want to continue at any time during the survey. Approximately, 300 questionnaires were distributed; a total of 267 students returned the completed questionnaires. The average age of the participants was approximately 20 years old with a range from 18 to 24. The participants included approximately 72% male students and 28% female students.
