california clean-up gets under way
GOLETA: more than 22,700 liters of oil was raked, skimmed and vacuumed yesterday from a spill that stretched across 15 km of california coast in a cleanup effort, officials said, but that's just a fraction of the oil that escaped from a broken pipeline. investigators found that up to 400,000 litres may have leaked out, and up to 80,000litres of that may have reached the sea. the chief executive of the company that runs the pipeline, plains all american pipeline LP, was at the site of the spill wednesday and apologised for it. " we apologise for the damage that it's done to the wildlife and to the environment," ceo greg armstrong said. ap
