Former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has revealed his belief that the club’s current owners may not invest heavily in the first team this summer.

Purslow has suggested that the Fenway Sports Group won’t dip into their own cash to invest in the team as Brendan Rodgers tries to push on with the possibility of Champions League football next season.

Liverpool will need to improve their squad this summer and make extra signings, which will allow Rodgers to assemble a squad capable of competing in Europe and remaining competitive in the Premier League.


“Liverpool will earn maybe £30m more next year because they’re in the Champions League. This will contribute to strengthening the squad next year. No question about it. Will they go beyond that with their own money? I somewhat doubt it,” he told TalkSport.

So is that insight and possibility majorly damaging to Liverpool? It wouldn’t help but it’s not the end of the world.

Liverpool are still well in the hunt to win the Premier League this season and if they managed to pull off a title victory, equipped with Champions League qualification, it will make them an even more valuable commodity around the world.

That will allow the club to take a Manchester United approach to their commercial revenue deals, renegotiating various contracts, which will allow the club to bring in extra revenue which can partially help Rodgers to improve the team.

The other option is to sell any player who may be deemed surplus to requirements by the club’s manager.

One of the beauties of a no extra help policy from the owners is that it will help Liverpool to become a sustainable club and business over the next few seasons.

Rodgers has already started showing signs of an impressive model, trying to socialise player contracts where possible and investing in youth, as well as bring players through the youth team system.
