Studies conducted over the last 30 years on sealed landfills in
the Iberian Peninsula (Hernández and Bartolomé, 2010; Hernández
et al., 1998; Pastor et al., 1993) have revealed an important problem
of salinity, heavy metal and organic co-contamination. This affects
the edaphic sealing of both landfills and surrounding soils. The
relative importance of each kind of pollution varies greatly between
locations (Pastor and Hernández, 2012). However, as the cited
works point out, this problem is extremely acute in areas where
heavy metal concentrations exceed permissible levels, the problem
being compounded by the presence of different families of organic
pollutants.
