Over the last few decades, demarcation lines have been drawn in the highlands, marking some regions as watershed areas and national parks, where generally no people are permitted to live (McKerron 2003). The people within those areas have found that their land for cultivation has shrunk, their spaces for living have been limited, and sometime they are no longer permitted to remain. During this time, the radio broadcasting station near Hua Fai gave them information in their own languages of job opportunities. Their movement into the city began around 1967, and their settlement in Hua Fai and Kamphaeng Ngam was said to have taken place around 1990 and later.
