2.7. Data and statistical analysis
The statistical data was presented as mean ± SEM. Parametric data which include all the biochemical parameters were analysed using a paired ‘t’ test for the paired data or one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by a Dunnet multiple comparisons post test. A probability value of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
3. Results
The results of preliminary phytochemical screening of ethanolic extract of T. cordifolia revealed that presence of alkaloid, amino acids, flavanoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, tannins, and triterpinoids. Mean (±SEM) of the haematological, urinary biochemical analysis data obtained in all five groups are given in Tables 1 and 2. Acute nephrotoxicity occurred in the group II rats due to cisplatin injections during 8 days and according to this, plasma creatinine and urea levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group (I). Animals which received the ethanol extract of roots of T. cordifolia alone (group V) for three days exhibited no change in serum markers level and urinary functional parameters. Hence, the ethanol extract of fruits of T. cordifolia did not show any deteriorative effects on kidney. To assess the nephroprotector activity of extract the data obtained from ethanol extract treated groups (III, IV) was compared with group II (animals which received only cisplatin injection).
