An effective alternative
The above studies teach us that HIIT shows promise as an effective low-vol- ume exercise approach that could significantly impact health for older adults. Cycling was the most commonly mea- sured mode in these studies. HIIT in other activities, including water exercise, still needs to be explored. More research is also required to identify the effects of HIIT on a wide range of populations and to determine the optimal intensity, modality and duration.
Beyond health outcomes, HITT has an added benefit for water-exercise participants: speed. With HITT, individuals can complete a low-impact, health- promoting workout in the pool in less time than a structured water aerobics class. And for busy people who might otherwise skip exercise, that alternative is welcome.
