Cinderella was a very beautiful girl, but she was very poor. Her mother died when she was a baby. Her father married another woman who had two bad ugly daughters.
Cinderella and her two bad stepsisters lived in the same house. She was
always in the kitchen. She worked and ate her meals alone there. The two girls and their mother did not work. They sat in the sitting room and read books. They ate their meals in the dining room.
One day there was a big party at the King’s palace. The two girls put on their beautiful clothes and went to the party. But Cinderella could not go to the party because she had only old clothes. She sat in the kitchen and cried.
“Don’t cry, Cinderella,” said a good fairy. “You will go to the party.” Here
are new clothes and new shoes for you. Dress quickly and go. You will find a gold carriage at the door. It will take you to the palace. But you must come back at midnight.”
Cinderella thanked the good fairy. She was very happy. She dressed quickly and got into the gold carriage which took her to the palace.
