MAP was intended to be a framework for the comprehensive control of industrialprocesses, andtheresultofthedefinitionwasnotonly apowerfulandflexibleprotocolbutalsoatoocomplexprotocol that did not have the intended success [8]. Consequently, the protocolstackwasdramaticallyreducedinsizeandcomplexity, and this “Mini-MAP” standard, subsequently, was a starting point for many fieldbus definitions. Similarly successful was the Manufacturing Message Specification. It defined the cooperation of automation components by means of abstract objects and services and became a role model for many field-level networks.
