India- Cyclone Hudhud to hit UP
Cyclone storm Hudhud is expected to hit the districts of north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast with maximum sustained wind speed of more than 130 km per hour gusting to 150 km per hour by Sunday afternoon, Economic Times reports. An alert has been sounded in nine out of 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh where standing crop of paddy, followed by groundnut, sugarcane, pulses and other horticulture crops, are yet to be harvested.
The union food minister has hinted at export subsidies and additional interest-free loans to private sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, even while their sugarcane arrears stand at over Rs30 billion for the 2013-14 crushing season, Business Standard reports. About 66 private mills had notified UP about suspension of operations in the coming season. They are demanding that the state first adopted a scientific formula for fixed cane prices.
