One particular type of adolescent activity group that requires considerable planning and materials is sand tray group counseling with adolescents. In this type of group "members build small worlds with miniature figures in individual trays of sand and share their worlds as they are willing" (Draper. Ritter & Willingham. 2003. p.244). With adolescents. the typical miniature col lection of realistic and fantasy people, animals, plants. structures. and transportation items must almost always be supplemented with "leisure, sport. and hobby items. such as miniature basketballs, skateboards. radios. and items that symbolize academic endeavors" (p. 247). The sand tray approach to group work with preadolescents has also proven effective. For instance. Flahive and Ray (2007) found that compared to a wait-list control group. the behaviors of 56 fourth and fifth graders who participated in a 10-week sand try group were rated significantly better.
