the Flesch Reading Ease Score is used to evaluate the reader's ability to
decode text. The formula is based on the average sentence length (in words) of
selected samples and on the average word length measured as syllables per 100
words of sample. It produces a number between 0 and 100 that express higher
scores indicate material that is easier to read and lower numbers mark passages that
are more difficult to read (Flesch, 2003).
The closer the score is to 100, the easier the content and the closer the score
to 0, the more difficult the content. It means a score of 100 denotes a passage that
can be understood by people who are barely literate. In general, a score below 30 is
considered very difficult, and a score of 70 is estimated to be written at the eighth or
ninth grade level. A score of 100 represents that the content is understood by
readers with at least a fourth grade education.
