Words versus Lexical items
Words possess two characteristics:
1. They have unpredictable meaning, so they are listed in dictionaries. Eg:
2.They are the building-blocks for words and phrases.
Eg: INSCRUTABLE
This picture is incrutable.
But the two characteristics do not always go together.
It will be helpful to have distinct terms for items with each of the two characteristics.
Some words are not lexical items .
There are some lexical items that are not words.
