Marcora and Bosio (2007) also reported that the increased rating of perceived exertion with exerciseinduced muscle damage was correlated with decreased 30-min time-trial performance, suggesting that reductions in endurance running performance might be mediated by ‘‘sense’’ of effort. Based on this recent research, we also anticipated that coldwater immersion would reduce the rating of perceived exertion after the 5-min shuttle run compared with thermoneutral immersion. However, cold-water immersion did not change the rating of perceived exertion and this could explain why we did not observe an effect of cold-water immersion compared
with thermoneutral immersion in any of the performance tests used in this study.
