Significance and benefits of the study
This study aims to contribute to understanding how the identified contextual factors
affect the introduction and use of e-learning which may also resonate with conditions in
other developing countries with similar social and cultural backgrounds, such as India,

Nepal, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Maldives. Also, this understanding of factors may be of
assistance to the Sri Lankan higher education system to improve teaching and learning
by identifying the support and skills that academic staff need to prepare for studentcentred
and activity-based teaching.
