SMEs have become more significant to Thailand's economy after the dawn of the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. The impact was huge towards Thailand's SMEs at that time in many sectors such as producing, trading and service sectors, resulting in new awareness by the government sector, as a result, there was the creation of the on-going National Development Policy and the demand for policy reform to aid Thailand's economic recovery with the principal agent, the so called National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB). The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP), in addition, was set up as the principal agent to implement SME policies as well as help SMEs recover from the past and future financial crises.
