Lubricants are also extensively utilized with large forestry
machines and add to the C emissions during operation. Brinker
et al. (2002) provide an estimate of lubricant cost as a proportion
(36.8%) of fuel cost. Using their estimate of $1.45 gal1
($0.38 L1
) of off-road fuel, as based on 2000 prices, would
provide $0.50 for lubricant. Estimating $40 gal1 ($10 L1
) for
the variety of necessary lubricants would provide an equivalent
of 0.062 gal/gal of fuel (0.062 L/L). Only a portion (25%) of
the lubricant utilized is consumed or oxidized. The Consortium
for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM,
2004) reports an estimate of 0.02 gal of lubricant consumption
per gallon of fuel consumption (0.02 L/L).
