When natural disasters hit, mobile technology takes on a cru-cial role transmitting information to and from devastation sites. Following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and seven-meter tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011, mobile devices and networks provided the connectivity that helped save lives, locate people, and support relief efforts. Throughout the Pacific region, many lives were saved thanks to early tsunami warnings sent and received via mobiles, which directed peo-ple to higher, safer grounds.
