problems in Cuba
in April 1961 months Kennedy became president,he had a big problem with Cuba.
The government of Cuba was Communist. The US
president before Kennedy, President Eisenhower,was
very worried about Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba. He
thought that Castro was very dangerous. Cuba is in the
Caribbean Sea,near to the state of Florida,in the south
of the US. Castro had a strong army, and Eisenhower was
worried that he was planning to attack the US.
But Eisenhower did not want to start a war with Cuba
openly. So he made a plan with his military advisors and
Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). There were nearly
1500 Cubans living in the US who did not agree with
Castro's government, and who were ready to fight him.
'If the Us army trains these Cubans,' thought
Eisenhower, 'we can send them to attack Castro. But we
will not use US soldiers in the attack.'
When Kennedy became president in 1961, the military
advisors told him to go on with Eisenhower's plan.
'Most people in Cuba are against Castro,'the advisors
told Kennedy.'When the Cuban soldiers arrive from the
US,the Cuban people will join the soldiers and fight with
them against Castro.'
Kennedy was not sure that the military advisors were
right, but he agreed to their plan. On 17 April 1961.five
