Our data suggest a preference for white and blue items, whereas
clear items were under-represented relative to beach debris across all
debris types. This might indicate that visual detection is more important
for ingestion than any resemblance to jellyfish and other gelatinous
zooplankton prey. However, trials with captive animals are needed to
better understand why turtles ingest different types of plastic, which
may relate to the presence of epibionts (Reisser et al., 2014) as well as
visual detection ability and/or visual similarity to prey species
