The ammonium content in compost taken right out of the composter
is too high to grow plants. Therefore, the compost must to
be plied for at least 20 days to further decompose before it can
be applied on the soil at Liberty Hall Farm at KU. During the stage
where the compost decomposes further, the compost continuously
loses mass as emissions to the air. The piled up stage is more closed
to the Windrow composting. The total weight loss from fresh food
scraps to compost for land use is between 50% and 70%, depending
on the amount of time allotted.
