Although there are certain contraindications to exercise during pregnancy (eg, pregnancy-induced hypertension, incompetent cervix), research on moderate aerobic exercise shows that exercise does not appear to have a negative effect on the developing fetus.Kulpa et al randomly assigned pregnant women to usual care or an exercise condition and found that the exercise intervention significantly reduced the amount of pregnancy weight gain (27 lb vs 34 lb) with no adverse effects on gestational age, birthweight, Apgar scores, or obstetric complications. Based in part on these data, current recommendations by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists are in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American College of Sports Medicine recommendation for exercise: to accumulate ≥30 minutes of moderate exercise on most, if not all, days of the week in the absence of either medical or obstetric complications.
