In conclusion, Facebook can help students become academically and socially integrated as long as they are provided with opportunities to develop requisite digital and academic skills. Such a high degree of connectivity between students and teachers can positively impact on student engagement, therefore increasing the likelihood of success in their learning. However, there needs to be a clear direction from the teachers as to what Facebook is being used for, beyond just socializing, and what students can gain from using it in this way. Students should also be supported towards understanding safe practices on Facebook. These are skills which would of course extend out into other life contexts, contributing to what is arguably the key goal of higher education: to create a fair and just society. Being friends, as the people in shared social networks on Facebook are called, is an essential ingredient for such a society to exist.
