Challenging Globalization (2000 - present)
World Trade Organization (WTO) accession in January 2002 and subsequent trade liberalization have made Taiwan's agriculture sector worse. In light of this harsh situation, the government has implemented new policies to develop the agriculture sector into a highly competitive and modernized green industry. Farmers are encouraged to join the life-long learning programs of information science and distribution under the e-Taiwan Construction Plan. In the face of the impacts of WTO entry, more and more farmers are switching their focus from crop cultivation to agricultural tourism, floriculture, and organic farming. The government welcomes these changes, provides assistance on farming labor transformation, and guides farmers to seek out a new, enterprising spirit.
