In
the present investigation the Jasminum Species were collected from
GKVK, FRLHT, Local nurseries in Bangalore and their antioxidant
activity was determined using DPPH with two different solvent
extractions using methanol and ethanol. The antioxidant activity was
compared with a standard compound ascorbic acid. DPPH scavenging
activity in both methanolic and ethanolic solvent showed increase in
activity with increase in sample concentration. In most of the samples the ethanolic extract
showed better antioxidant activity when compared to the methanolic extract. It was found that
among the ethanolic solvent extracted sample, Jasminum auriculatum showed better
antioxidant activity followed by Jasminum aungustifolium. Jasminum sambac cultivar variety
showed the least antioxidant activity as it required 1300µl of the sample to reduce DPPH to
50% from its initial concentration. In methanolic solvent extracted sample, Jasminum
grandiflorum showed a better antioxidant activity followed by Jasminum sambac wild
variety. Jasminum sambac cultivar variety showed the least antioxidant activity as it required
1100µl of the sample to reduce DPPH to 50% from its initial concentration. This study thusproves that plant belonging to Jasminum posse’s antioxidant properties that could be helpful
in some of the drugs.
