Reported accidental injuries are much higher than the rates observed in other countries. Rahman and Ali (2000) reported that in Japan 67% of HCE staff reported accidental injuries, compared with 50% in Peru and 18% in USA. It is possible that the difference is even greater than it seems as there is no possibility of compensation for injuries suffered in Bangladesh, and so no incentive to remember or report an injury. Many of the injuries reported in this study involve
foot injuries resulting from standing on sharps, or hand injuries from handling sharps. These could easily be addressed by provision of PPE. The provision of education and training would
also help to address the issue (Adegboye et al., 1994).
