Early in the epidemic, gross malnutrition in the form of “slim disease” was described among adults in Uganda . The prevalences of wasting were reported to be 40% in adult with AIDS in Burundi and 44% in HIV-infected subjects in an autopsy study in Cote d’Ivoire . Baseline evaluation of the first 145 HIV-infected children to receive ARV therapy in Botswana showed that 59% were severely wasted (weight-for-age 2 standard deviations below the median), and 75% were severely stunted (height-for-age 2 standard deviations below the median) .
