In order to tighten security, Carnival has installed electronic-access control systems on its ships. When passengers board, they will place a plastic card in a kiosk, where a security guard will match their picture to their face. This card also serves as a room key, and on-board credit card. When the ship stops at its port of call, guests must "swipe out" when leaving the ship. When they return, they "swipe" back in. The crewmembers will have similar credentials.
