Silk is generally considered the queen of overall fibers because of its distinguished beauty and luxury characteristics i.e. luster, softness, and good absorption. Appreciation in silk can then be derived from both the way it looks and the comfort it gives when wearing. Silk weaving and so silk textiles have been a part of Thai culture for a long time. In the past, Thai women traditionally wove the silk for their personal and daily use only. This wisdom thus has been passed from generation to generation in Thailand. Until now, silk weaving is still practiced as a part of some Thai women’s daily life. Apart from weaving for personal use within the household, the silk is widely sold domestically and internationally in order to generate income to the family and the country. The well-known project “One Tambon One Product (OTOP)” in Thailand is a good example demonstrating that there are many silk products available successfully in the market. Continuity in production and promotion of Thai silk to be widely accepted both in national and international levels is therefore the significant issue.
The Modern Thai Silk project was thus initiated by the Office of Knowledge Management and Development (Public Organization) under the provision of the Prime Minister Office. It aims basically to recognize the significance and increase the value added of Thai silk. Knowledge management regarding the complete Thai silk business among all producers, manufacturers and designers is the core objective in the project. With recommendations from involved expert consultants, various Thai silk aspects in raw materials, equipment, design trends locally and internationally will be discussed for the profound understanding. The project is targeted to strengthen Thai silk product differentiation, value added, confidence and acceptance in everywhere market
